		<description>Very interesting premise. There's no way not to agree that there's something wrong with the way schools are generally mandated to teach math, and that they are doing (again,generally) a pretty dismal job. 

It's harder to figure out where the blame lies, though. I think this is the kind of "hot-button" issue that quickly turns into a complex question/simple solution phenomenon. 

More important than even math education is critical thinking. I don't believe the answer is "going back to" anything. I don't even  believe there is "an" answer, because the problem is much too involved for one answer. (Maybe I don't know what the heck I'm talking about, though.) 

I've put up some thoughts at my blog at &lt;a href="http://mathmojo.com/chronicles/2008/09/04/us-math-education-is-broken-and-must-be-fixed/" rel="nofollow"&gt;The Math Mojo Chronicles&lt;/a&gt; and I hope you don't mind my mentioning that here. 

It's nice to see that you are covering such an important issue. It's important that America does turn into a nation of doofuses. We've been on the wrong track for too long.
